All commercial media must sell themselves and their audiences to potential advertisers. As publications cannot relied on the revenue of sales any more, not like they use to back in the 19^th century as printing cost was low and demand was high.

This has lead to dependence on advertiser as the advertiser help keep down the price of production and cost of the newspaper. This puts advertiser in a position of great power as they can control what gets published. Also they can stop a story fully if they find that it is harmful to any of their interests. For any commercial publication, TV station or radio to survive it has to make sure it’s an advertiser-friendly median.

Broadsheets have less adverting then tabloids. But that where the first filter of corporate ownership comes into the fold as most broadsheet are privately own property. Advertising is keep to a minimum and if you when through a newspaper you would see that the ads themselves are from the owner other property. Tabloids are also privately own but are wall to wall with adverting and large parts of the paper concerns with only sports and celebrity news.They get water down version of the news that does not talk must about financial or government activity.
