Broadcasting
Broadcasting as a Mass MediumCompared to books and newspapers broadcasting brought both information and entertainment into the home and covers everyday subject matter and for a lot of people its there main source of information thereby making it an important tool in politics. Broadcasting is mostly funded by advertising so it can be used and changed by the market. Unlike newspapers and books broadcasting could bring the events to a larger audience and into people homes making them more aware of the politic and socially changes around them. Governments also recognised the social and political goodness of broadcasting. Seen as having potential to inform and influence, and even to influence voting behaviour
but also as a dangerous moral and social role, A commitment to the education of the public. Broadcast media had a very effective ability to focus public attention, to contribute to the creation of public opinion, to legitimise a public policy, and Serving the Public Sphere
Public Service BroadcastingThere are two types of public service broadcasting independence and funding
Independence
Public service broadcasting is based on a idea of being independence from the government and the commercial market. The idea of being independence stated in Britain and became a main feature of broadcast systems in the Western part of Europe .
Funding
Public funding came from either taxing or licence fee this system of funding
from licence fee is intended to provide a distance from the market. It is also designed to offer a public funding that is not subject to interference from the government of the day.
In American Television came in the 1940 and by 1955 half of all U.S. households had TV sets in there home. In England they had the BBC in the 1930s which was suspended during world war two. (1939-1946) after that ITV was set up as the first commercial station.
In Ireland there was only the BBC up until the 1960s with the Broadcasting Authority Act, with the beginning of RTE 1 which was Ireland only main TV station until 1978 with the founding of RTE 2 which give people a demand for choice and in 1979 the introduction of cable brought competition. Due to this the radio and television act 1988. Cable and satellite competition in the 90s saw a huge increase in the numbers and channels and international operators.
